Understanding Your Dog as an Individual

Have you ever wondered why your dog behaves the way they do?

Why one dog happily greets everyone they meet, while another prefers to watch from a distance?

Why some dogs love carrying toys, others spend hours sniffing, and some seem happiest curled up on the sofa?

Every dog is different, and there is always a reason behind their behaviour.

One way of understanding those differences is through the L.E.G.S.® framework, developed by Kim Brophey, founder of Family Dog Mediation®.

Rather than asking, "How do I stop this behaviour?", L.E.G.S. encourages us to ask,

"Why is my dog behaving this way?"

It reminds us to look beyond the behaviour itself and understand the whole dog.

L – Learning

Every experience shapes your dog.

Dogs are constantly learning—from people, other dogs and the environments around them.

Positive experiences, frightening situations, routines and even our own responses all influence how dogs feel and behave.

E – Environment

A dog's surroundings have a huge impact on their wellbeing.

Think about:

🐾 Walking routes

🐾 Noise levels

🐾 Other dogs

🐾 Visitors

🐾 Daily routine

G – Genetics

Every breed was developed throughout history for a specific purpose, and many of those natural instincts remain today.

For example:

🐾  Sighthounds were bred to chase fast-moving prey, such as rabbits and hares, using their speed and keen eyesight.

🐾 Terriers were bred to hunt vermin, so digging, exploring and chasing are often natural behaviours.

🐾 Retrievers were bred to retrieve game gently, which is why many love carrying toys and objects.

These aren't behaviours to "train out."

They're part of who our dogs are.

Understanding breed traits allows us to provide enrichment that feels meaningful to the individual dog.

Perhaps the most important part of L.E.G.S. is remembering that every dog is an individual.

• Age

• Health

• Personality

• Confidence

• Life experiences

• Preferences

All of these influence how a dog experiences the world.

Even two dogs of the same breed can have completely different needs.

Looking at the Whole Dog

When we combine Learning, Environment, Genetics and Self, behaviour starts to make much more sense.

Instead of focusing only on what a dog is doing, we begin to understand why they're doing it.

That shift in perspective helps us support dogs with greater patience, empathy and understanding.

Behaviour isn't simply something to change.

Behaviour is communication.
